Article Review Process

Editorial Process

Editors-in-Chief
  • Oversees entire peer review process, defines editorial policies
  • Also function as Journal Managers

Managing Editor
  • First person to receive and assign articles to section editors
  • Keep track of timelines and schedules
  • Move articles to post-review editing

Publication Director
  • Management of post peer-review editing – copy, layout, and proofreading

Section Editors
  • Responsible for a certain section of the journal – by article type
  • Assign peer reviewers to review articles and qualified editorial decisions

Reviewers
  • Perform first-line peer review, providing critical appraisal and comments on articles

Guest Reviewers
In some cases, a guest reviewer such as a Faculty Advisor, medical resident or post-doctoral fellow will provide feedback on content related to their area of expertise.

Details

1. Each submitted article will first be screened by the Managing Editor to ensure that the submission criteria is met (4 days). Managing editors will also serve as sole liaisons between the author and the editorial board to ensure a double-blinded review process.

2. Once approved, the article will be sent to an Section Editor, will select up to 3 reviewers to critically appraise the article and provide recommendations. Once all reviews are received, the Section Editor will correspond with the author to provide the editorial decision and reviewer feedback (2-3 weeks).

3. Upon satisfactory revision, the article will be passed on to the Editor-in-Chief for a final round of review, based on which a decision regarding acceptance will be made.

4. Once accepted, the article is relayed to the publication director, who coordinates the journal’s final stage of publication. Copy editors will proofread the article for language use, spelling and syntax. Lastly, layout editors will format the article and incorporate it into a future issue UOJM, or prepare it for online publication (typically for articles not suited for the theme of the upcoming issues).
